When Andrew Ritchie designed the Brompton, it was a direct refusal of planned obsolescence. In many ways, that was the marketing, because if there was one thing Ritchie resisted, it was marketing itself. Brompton is a bike built to last a lifetime, maybe several. It is engineered to be continually repairable, a durable argument against disposability and a foundation for a true circular economy, where one riderโs preloved bike becomes another riderโs love affair.
The Circular Economy of a Brompton
But even with that multi-life permanence, where parts carry forward and repair always makes sense, the urge for something new remains. Brompton, after all, keeps moving, though progress here does not mean discarding the past. It means carrying it forward. In a world that too often treats products as eventual landfill, used bikes have a real and necessary place, provided they can offer someone else a full second life. Brompton are committed to the circular economy, and so are we. That’s where our Brompton Preloved program begins.

The original Brompton use case was the train commuter with a last mile problem between home and station, and station and work. A bike that followed the whole trip. But, much to Ritchieโs raised eyebrows, people did that and then went further. They took their Brompton on planes, sailboats, in camper vans, and on multi-month, even multi-year trips.
Built for all Spaces (And the Spaces In Between)
A Brompton’s use case is different because the premise is simple: a true city bike has to be as good indoors as it is outdoors. Most bikes – if you think about it – are designed to get you out of the indoors, to take you to the so-called great outdoors. A Brompton can do that, but it also recognizes that life in the city usually means going outdoors only to get somewhere indoors again. And, once inside, it has to become something else entirely. Rollable like a suitcase. Small enough to live under a desk. A precision tool that adapts to the spaces in between.

As a Brompton userโs use case expands, it often means pushing deeper into that indoor and outdoor life. As long time sellers of Brompton, we’ve observed that Brompton has been playing catch-up to the use cases its riders keep inventing. This especially explains the new Brompton G Line.
Unfolding the Use Case
But Brompton has also been reinventing their traditional 16″ wheeled bike. In 2021 and 2022, the P Line and T Line arrived. These bikes exploded that indoor and outdoor use case. Indoors, lighter bikes are easier to carry up stairs. Outdoors, they use more advanced materials like titanium. This take the edge off long rides and reduce fatigue. The result is a bike that moves more easily through buildings and more comfortably through distance. The instinct to upgrade is not about replacing something. It is about making better what is already working.

The same idea applies to the Brompton Electric. Brompton has long believed in the e-bike as the ultimate tool for the last mile. A bike that climbs any hill, arrives sweat free, and still carries up a flight of stairs. It opens up distance without giving up the compact form. A Brompton Electric cracks open gridlock without a change of clothes required.
Passing it On
So, an upgrade starts to make sense. But, chances are the hassle of selling it privately is not appealing. Your bike has already done its job, and then some. It has paid you back in time saved, money saved, and the simple ease of getting around. At a certain point, it feels right to pass that on. This is where the Pedaal Preloved program fits into a Brompton’s circular economy.

First, we assess the value of your Brompton based on model, age, condition, and current market demand. From here, we take a modest 15% cut, and deduct any parts or service needed to bring it back to form. From there, it enters our Preloved program and finds a new home, ready for its next lifetime of use. You get a credit with us, ready to be applied to your next Brompton, whether that means a bike thatโs easier to carry upstairs, more comfortable over distance, or better suited to the way your indoor and outdoor life is evolving.
