Most outdoor products are sold with a promise of conquest. Faster, further, higher, harder. The bicycle industry is fond of this language. Even gravel riding, which began as a nice way to escape traffic, is all about finish lines, power meters and multiple ads featuring pain, sweat and masochism. Luckily, there’s Brompton. Their great innovation was not making the bicycle race-ready (although they host the silliest race in the world). It was making the bicycle easier to take with you. And wander.

Ride and Wander

This is what Keita Ikeuchi noticed. Ikeuchi and Mihoko Mori founded and wander in Tokyo in 2011 after working together as designers at Issey Miyake. They liked camping and hiking, but could not find outdoor clothing they actually wanted to wear. The industry offered serious equipment for conquering serious mountains, much of it designed to make the wearer look as if they had recently survived an avalanche.

Ikeuchi and Mori were looking for something else: clothing that worked for a weekend outside Tokyo, looked good in Tokyo when they returned, and did not require them to adopt a separate outdoor personality in between.

Without a Finish Line

The name comes from the idea of roaming without a fixed objective. and wander is not opposed to technical performance. Its clothing is field-tested in the mountains and made from materials selected for rain, wind, weight and durability. The point is to make going outside easier and more pleasurable, without turning the mountain into another arena in which to prove yourself.

This is where the ideas behind and wander and Brompton converge. One makes clothing that moves easily between the city and the outdoors. The other makes a bicycle that moves easily between the street, train, apartment and trail. Both erase the false distinction between life in the city and life outdoors.

Design Language

The Brompton ร— and wander G Line is built around this shared idea. The G Line already makes the connection between city and outdoors mechanically. Its 20-inch wheels and hydraulic disc brakes provide stability on gravel paths, rough roads and hard-packed dirt. What it lacks is a visual design language for the kind of life this engineering makes possible.

Luckily, and wander has spent years developing this design language with clothing. Subdued colours reflect the landscape, while bright, reflective details remain useful in poor weather and city traffic. On theย and wander G Line, this becomes textured metallic grey, taupe contact points, acid-yellow hardware and reflective details. The collaboration gives the bike a visual language for what it was already engineered to do.

Between the Bicycle and the Body

On the bicycle, and wander gives visual form to what the G Line already does. The backpack goes further because it must belong equally to the bicycle and the body. You do not wear a bicycle, but you do wear clothing, and the bag moves between the two. At 11 litres, it is sized for the overlap between a day outside and an ordinary day in the city. On the bike, it locks onto Bromptonโ€™s front carrier block and carries the weight on the frame, while the shoulder straps disappear behind the rear panel.

Off the bike, the rigid carrier frame disappears beneath a padded back, avoiding the usual compromise of a bike bag that is technically, but not comfortably, wearable. The ECOPAK fabric, roll-top closure and Aquaguard zip provide water and abrasion resistance outdoors, while three internal pockets prevent your keys from vanishing to the bottom of the bag in the city. It’s part of the the bicycle when riding and becomes clothing off the bike.

Unfold And Wander

Ikeuchi has said that most bicycle brands are concerned with going faster or further, while Brompton seems to hold a different set of values. He is right. A Brompton does not extend a journey by demanding more from the rider. It extends the journey by allowing the bicycle to come along.

The G Line takes that freedom beyond the city, while and wander gives visual form to the kind of life its engineering makes possible. Put it on a train, get off somewhere unfamiliar, unfold it and see what happens. The world does not always need to be conquered. Sometimes it is enough to leave the city without dressing for an expedition, unfold a bicycle at the other end of the train line and wander around.

Where to Buy

Like all Brompton collaborations, the and wander edition was produced in extremely limited numbers, with only five coming to Canada. As Bromptonโ€™s Canadian distributor, we offered an allocation to a leading retailer in each region. On the West Coast, the bike will be available from Westpoint Cycles. In the Prairies, it will be available from Bike Bike in Calgary. There is no dealer allocation in Quebec for this release, so Pedaal will be serving Quebec customers directly. Unfortunately,ย and wander clothing will not be available in North America. Buy yours quickly! Like all Brompton collaborations, you can expect this bike to appreciate in value over time.
